Green Your Neighborhood
The 2008 Green Living Challenge included a neighborhood challenge. Every Arlington resident who completed a Green Living Pledge by November 1, 2008 earned one point for their civic association. Dominion Hills Civic Association won catering for a party for 75 from Whole Foods Market. The runner up was Ashton Heights. See the final neighborhood standings.
There are numerous ways to green your neighborhood and get your neighbors involved in the Green Living Challenge. Consider the following:
- Invite an ACE speaker to your civic association meeting to promote green living activities.
- Request Green Living Pledge forms to hand out at a meeting or block party (available in packs of 25 for single-family homes and townhouses OR for apartments and condominiums).
- Organize a green living team to support your neighbors in greening their homes. If you’d like to make this formal, ACE has workbooks and training available for a three-month neighborhood stewardship program.
- Organize a green tour to demonstrate what your neighbors are doing showing off examples of energy efficient lighting, green renovations, rain barrels and cisterns, wildlife habitats, etc.
- Organize a neighborhood service project. Ideas include:
- A street, park, or stream cleanup.
- An invasive removal project.
- A tree planting project.
- Storm drain marking to affix “No Dumping” decals.
- Community sponsored yard sale to reuse unwanted items.
