Arlington, Va., December 4, 2000 -- Photographs of Four Mile Run and Arlington parks were spotlighted as part of an art exhibit organized by a local environmental group, Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment (ACE). The photographs are part of a Year 2001 calendar now available from ACE.
"The calendar showcases the natural beauty around us, and reminds us every day to appreciate and take care to protect our natural resources," said Martin Ogle, ACE chairman. He noted that the calendar is also an important educational tool, incorporating facts about Arlington's history and natural environment in addition to the photographs. Titled "Exploring Arlington Outdoors," the calendar features fine art quality photographs by local freelancer John Robinette. Last year's ACE calendars, which also featured work by Robinette, won a 1999 Excellence in Print award from the Printing and Graphic Communications Association and were profiled in the Washington Post and on local television.
"Most people know Four Mile Run as the creek that runs through some of Arlington's most popular walking, running, and biking paths and some of the most popular picnic areas and ball fields," said Robinette. "It is all that, and more -- it has its own life."
The stream still needs help. Robinette admits he often had to remove trash before snapping a photo. "Hopefully, I'll need to do that less and less," said Robinette. Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment is a nonprofit educational and service organization funded primarily by the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services. Proceeds from sale of the calendar will benefit stream protection programs of ACE and other local organizations. Wholesale prices are available to qualified groups. Calendars are available for $5 plus shipping and handling, and can be obtained by sending a check or money order to ACE, 3308 S. Stafford St., Arlington VA 22206. Information is available at 703-228-6427.
