ACE sponsors both volunteer events, such as stream cleanups, invasive plant removals, highway cleanups, and storm drain markings, and educational Green Living events. Our Featured Upcoming Events: ACE has openings on our Board of Directors. The board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Board responsibilities include development, program management, and fiscal oversight. For information on the requirements for serving on the board, please contact Elenor Hodges via email or by calling 703-228-6427. Volunteers for the Expo Planning Committee. The committee will meet on first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. - January 5, February 2, and March 1. The committee is looking for help with event logistics, marketing, and soliciting donations. Committee members do not have to be able to make every meeting to participate. To join, please email Elenor. Winter Nature Celebration - Open the Door to Nature. Saturday, February 11, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (snow date February 18). Presented by Chick-fil-A at the Ballston Common Mall Food Court, 4238 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. FREE. It’s not too cold outside to enjoy nature and the outdoors! Join the Arlington Children and Nature Network and take part in some great activities to learn about nature and how to enjoy our urban environment, even in winter! The event will include crafts, exhibits, a kid-friendly walk of the Ballston neighborhood led by WalkArlington, and refreshments including hot beverages courtesy of Chick-fil-A. In the event of inclement weather, we will follow Arlington Public Schools announcements for weekend activities (www.apsva.us). January 25, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Do you have suggestions for how VA should spend funds for outdoor recreation and land conservation? The VA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will be conducting statewide public meetings to gather citizen input for the 2013 Virginia Outdoors Plan - the state’s comprehensive plan for prioritizing spending for outdoor recreation, land conservation and open space needs. Written by DCR planners in coordination with state, federal and local partners, the plan provides long-term guidance for all levels of government. Thursday, February 2 from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. Take a look at native plants from the perspective of a key slice of life that is tied to these plants...bees. Regionally, there are over 400 species of native bees and many are only found on the flowers of specific plants. Explore the plant-pollinator relationship from the bee point of view and learn why what we plant has consequences for these fascinating creatures. Speaker: Sam Droege, biologist with the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Virginia Native Plant Society programs are free and open to the public. No reservations necessary.
